Family unhappy when sister’s boyfriend “pops” the question

April Fool’s Day prank backfires as happy news takes an unsuspected turn.

I’ve never been too fond of April Fool’s Day, nor have I ever participated to a great extent in the “festivities” that surround it. I am neither one who plays pranks nor have I experienced being the victim of many. Last year, however, my sister pulled one that is worthy of the record books.

My eldest sister, Terri, had been dating her boyfriend, Kenny, for about six months. They were getting along really well and things couldn’t have been better. Then near April Fools day Kenny, the innate joker that he is, had an idea. He and my sister were to pull off a fake engagement!

It was not the engagement that was the prank, however, as much as it was how they did it. They both simply changed their Facebook relationship statuses and waited for people to notice. Soon my mother and father and middle sister, Trisha, were up in arms about this supposed engagement. They were upset, confused, and in the case of Trisha, furious that they learned about such a huge event through Facebook.

My sister and her “fiancĂ©” waited the entire day before they let the family in on the joke. I, myself, thought it was hilarious from the start. The rest of the family had some differing opinions, but needless to say that the prank was successful!

Two months later Kenny proposed for real and the couple got married last month and the funny "engagement" story is still told often.

April Fool’s or not, how would you feel if you learned about important news through Facebook.
